Rescheduled: weekend works at M20 junction 1, Swanley, Kent

10pm Friday 17 January to 5:30am Monday 20 January 2025

Connect Plus Services works on behalf of National Highways and Connect Plus to manage, operate and maintain the M25 and its linking roads, as well as the Dartford-Thurrock River Crossing.

We’ll soon be upgrading more than 350 metres of motorway central reservation barrier at M20 junction 1. A new barrier system will be installed to enhance safety and make future maintenance requirements easier and more efficient.

We had to postpone our closure in December 2024, which we wrote to you about previously, due to unsuitable weather conditions. We’ve now replanned our work and we’ll be using one of our backup weekend closure bookings to install the new safety barrier.

The M20 will be closed between the slip roads at junction 1 from 10pm on Friday 17 January until 5:30am on Monday 20 January 2025.

A short diversion route for east and westbound traffic will be in place via M20 junction 1:

A20 eastbound traffic will exit at M20 junction 1, using the northern section of the Swanley Interchange and the M20 entry slip road to continue eastbound.

M20 westbound traffic will exit at M20 junction 1, using the southern section of the Swanley Interchange and the A20 entry slip road to continue westbound.

The slip roads between the M20 and M25, and the B2173 London Road, will remain open over the weekend, including the free-flowing link roads which directly connect the M20 and M25 to the east of the Swanley Interchange.

Why is a weekend closure required?
Like on any motorway, it’s essential that a safe and reliable barrier remains in place to protect road users. There will be periods without a barrier separating the east and westbound carriageways during this work and so a full closure is necessary for safety.
We’ll work continually over a 56-hour period to deliver the barrier upgrade in a single weekend and avoid any longer-term disruption. The new barrier and its foundations use a modular construction, making it easier and faster to replace any damaged parts, should repairs be needed in the future, and quicker to carry out routine maintenance activities.
Additional information
The traffic signals at the junction will be adjusted to help maintain traffic flows on the weekend. We are however expecting some delays in the area at peak times and recommend that you allow additional time for travel. We’ve carefully rescheduled this work; should we encounter any further unsuitable weather or other unplanned events, we may need to use an additional weekend closure in February or March 2025, subject to further approvals, to complete the barrier upgrades.
As you may know, there are other major works currently underway on the M20 and M25. You can find out more about these projects at www.nationalhighways.co.uk/m25..., www.nationalhighways.co.uk/eme... and https://nationalhighways.co.uk....
If you have any further questions, or would like to know more about this work, please contact the National Highways Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000, available 24 hours a day, or via email at info@nationalhighways.co.uk.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused by our work being postponed last month. We’d like to thank you once again for your patience and understanding while we complete this important work.
Yours faithfully,
Ben Evans
